History of Stained glass

glass_005

Coloured glass was first used in architecture in the early Christian temples of the East, in the form of blocks incorporated in walls. This also marked the beginning of its mystic relation with internal spaces. For real leaded stained glass one has to wait to see the first steps in northern France and in Germany of the 9th century, while its big flourishing will take place later on, following the evolution of gothique architecture and the construction of big openings in churches.
